Kim Salzer, who served as EA's director of product marketing from 2000 – 2003, revealed this during an exclusive interview with The Real Brandolorian. When asked about what games he liked but never appeared, he mentioned the MMO Harry Potter.
"The big one for me, because I'm personally involved in it, is that it's a very big and long-lived IP, which is an MMO game for Harry Potter," said Salzer.
“We did all the research. We've already built a beta for the game. It was a combination of an offline/online experience where we would deliver stuff to the kids, like gifts, ribbons and things like that.”
Salzer continued, “We have researched it thoroughly and are very confident in its success. But that's not the case for lack of a better term. At the time, EA was going through changes and they didn't quite know or believe that the Harry Potter IP would have a lifespan of more than a year or two."
Harry Potter Returns in Hgward Legacy Game Form
If we look at the year mentioned by Salzer, EA at that time held the rights to the Harry Potter IP in 2000 – 2003. After that, Warner Bros. Games takes control of the IP under its label, Portkey Games.
Entering 2020, Warner Bros. Games has announced Hogwarts Legacy, a game based on the Harry Potter IP. This game is being developed by Avalanche Software, but they postponed its release to 2022.
In an interview, Warner Bros. Games hinted that Hogwarts Legacy would be out in late 2022. Rachel Wakely (general manager of Warner Bros.) spoke to Toy World magazine about the Harry Potter IP, where she referred to "two major releases in 2022".
Hogwarts Legacy is confirmed to be releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2022.
